There is so much negative stigma surrounding MD that we all need to be aware of in order to remove it.
-
Many people wrongly assume that those living with a diagnosis of DMD have an intellectual disability. This is entirely untrue. DMD is not an intellectual disability, it is a physical disability, meaning it affects the body but not the brain.
-
People also assume that those living with forms of MD can't live as great of a life as their bodies function differently. But while their bodies may function differently to ours, it does not mean that they live any less wonderful of a life than any other individual. A diagnosis of MD does not stop an individual from achieving great things and living a full life.
-
When people see someone in a wheelchair they assume that they should treat them differently or act differently around them. But it should not be the case. Those with a diagnosis of MD who may be in a wheelchair should not be treated any differently to someone who is not as they are no different and deserve as much respect as those without MD.
